In the 50’s and 60’s, teenage drivers often had an assortment of items dangling from their rearview mirror. Not to be outdone by their children, parents (and I mean dads) also created a space in their car for valued “stuff”. For my Uncle Ole, it was a statue of a hula girl.  A 5” hula girl was placed proudly on his dashboard, almost directly under the rear view mirror. As the car moved, the hula girl jiggled. I am not sure what he liked about the hula girl. It may have been the jiggle or the idea that the hula girl brought to mind the ocean. My uncle grew up in South Dakota.  He never saw the ocean in person until he and his wife migrated to Oregon. Many of his SD relatives have made the same 3-day car trip, just to see the Pacific Ocean for the first time.
